Carol Jolgren (Marsack)

Carol Jean Jolgren 5/11/1934 – 9/30/2008

* We had a wonderful afternoon on Saturday and we want to thank all of our friends and family who were able to be with us to help celebrate Carol’s life! Over 90 people gathered together on a sunny November afternoon catching up, telling stories, and sharing sweet, sweet memories. The house was filled with much laughter and only the occasional tear, just as our mother would have wanted:)

After a long and courageous battle with the lung disease bronchiectasis, Carol passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 30, 2008 at the age of seventy-four. Although our hearts are broken, we are thankful we had time with her at the end of her life to say those things that often become regrets when a life comes to an end suddenly. The love of her four children, her grandchildren, her great-granddaughter, and her devoted husband Lee gave her the strength to bear a very difficult illness. And as sad as we are to let her go, we believe that she is at peace now, no longer struggling for each breath and most likely hosting one helluva a great party with her beloved sister Maxine for the many friends and relatives who met her on the other side:)

In accordance with Carol’s wishes her body was cremated after her corneas were donated to the Gift of Life Donor program. The family held an intimate hillside service with clergy in a park that concluded with the Lord’s Prayer and the release of twenty white balloons. As we watched the balloons float up into a perfect autumn sky, we could almost feel Carol’s spirit soar with them. We know she was with us that afternoon, we know she will always be with us. Feel free to leave on-line condolences by clicking on comments at the top or bottom of this page (you do not have to fill in the e-mail or website boxes to comment).

When we saw the video below and the heard the song we thought it expressed our mother’s spirit perfectly. She grew up in a big family filled with lots of love, but it was also a family that had its share of challenges. Carol was one of fourteen children born to Eugene Marsack and Lily Labadie. Her father was a plasterer and her mother struggled day to day just to feed and clothe her large family. When Carol was a little girl she dreamed of marrying a good man and having a family of her own someday, making a home that was safe as well as nurturing, she dreamed of giving her children the childhood she didn’t have – and that is exactly what she did.

  2. My sincere condolences on your loss. I will always remember Carol as a special person who would make me feel like part of your family when I visited the D & L office.

  3. What a lovely memorial to a special woman. The video was very touching, and seeing through photos an adorable girl growing into a beautiful wife, mother, grandmother and great-mother were moving. Thank you for sharing. I noticed the Evergreen address – did your folks use to sell holiday craft items at their home, Lilly? If so, then I visited every year, and came home with some wonderful wood and fabric decorations from them! May your family find comfort knowing that your mom is at peace. May your father find solace in the memories of the life they had together.
    God’s Blessings,
    Tom and Edie

  4. To all of Carol’s family, especially Lee, let me offer my most sincere condolences.

  5. Sorry for your loss. As when my mother passed (Audrey Marsack) it was a trying
time as she was the glue that held us (her kids) together.

She is missed daily as I am sure Carol is but rest assured that she is with her
siblings that have crossed over before.

  6. Hello family. I am sorry to read that Carol has passed. I knew her from my daze at Dr. Goldenberg’s dental office. It was always a pleasure to see her, Lee and the Days on the schedule.
My favorite memory of Carol was when she came in around Halloween for a front tooth that came out. She had on a jack-o-lantern shirt, because she thought it fit the occasion!! What a hoot!!
Take care of each other, Carol

  7. carol was the aunt that i related to the most out of my dad’s family (warren). she was always so cheerful and full of life. my last memory of aunt carol was at my nephew skippy’s funeral and i told her she did not look a day older than the last time i saw her which was years ago when i flew to michigan for the family reunion she put together. she always looked so young i think because of her vibrant personality.
i know she is in heaven with the rest of her past family and having a grand time.

  12. My heart goes out to Lee, David, Lily, Amy, Carrie and the rest of the family at the loss of this wonderful woman. She was so vibrant, energetic, and loving. We really appreciate the many times that you all allowed us to “crash” your family events. We always felt welcome.

  13. Amy,
I am so very sorry for your loss. My condolences to you and your family at this time. What beautiful memories you all have; and your mother was a beautiful woman. Thank-you for sharing them. As I said before…I feel privledged to have met your Mom last month. Even though she wasn’t feeling well I could tell she was someone who had fun and loved heartily. A legacy indeed. Mother’s love is so very precious.

  14. It is impossible to pick out one favorite memory from the thousands we shared with Carol and Lee over the last fifty years. Unfortunately, with both of our growing families taking more of our time, we have have not been as close these last years as we had been while our children grew, and Lee and I worked side by side. Carol was simply one of our most precious friends, and she will be in our memories as long as we live.

  15. To Lee Jolgren and Family,

We read of Carol’s passing in the Detroit News. Please accept our deepest sympathies on your loss. We remember her from your time here with us. We hope you can take comfort in knowing that she is now in that place of pure delight.

    Sincerely and Respectfully,

  18. Dear Lee and family,
I’ve been trying find the right words about your mom for the last few days. Carol was more than a neighbor and friend, she was an inspiration. Her love and kindness have touched our lives in ways that will never be diminished. My heart aches for your loss but we will hold her spirit with us forever.

  19. To the extended Jolgren family I am sorry for loss. Aunt Carol spoke to us on a mature level when we were children. She always had supportive comments and was quick to hug and kiss as a greeting. She will be missed. When thinking of Aunt Carol memories of Grandma Marsack’s home long ago surface. May she find peace.

  20. Aunt Carol got me through some rough times over the years. I will miss her. I know she’s home with the LORD. Also a grand reunion must be going on with her parents and brother & sisters who went before. I will always remember her dedication to her own mother in her last years. In this incredibly LARGE family of ours Aunt Carol was always a blessing to us. She will be missed. Uncle Lee , I know you feel her loss the most, but remember You loved her well and long, she’ll be waiting for you in paradise. love to all

Debby (daughter of Warren & Agnes) who have also passed on

  21. This is a beautiful website and it brings all the faces together for me. Carrie Bruce and I are best friends in California and I hear all her family stories and share her joy in all the family photos she has around her house. I know living so far away from her family is hard, but she keeps in touch with her photos, emails and phone calls. Her mother was a wonderful woman and I always enjoyed talking and visiting with her when she came to California to visit Carrie and her family. We will miss her out here that’s for sure. God bless the whole family and keep those memories close to your hearts forever. All our best, The Quessenberry Family

  22. Dear Jolgren family,

    You are in our prayers,
    Sue, Greg & family

  23. Dear Jolgren Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Carol’s passing. I remember how she always made me feel so welcome when visiting with Carrie and Jenny when they lived with her on Hampton Hill. My son, Kenny had the opportunity to get to know Carol and spend some time with her a few years ago while living back in Michigan. He really enjoyed their conversations. The website is beautiful and may you find peace and comfort in all of the wonderful memories of her.

    Sincerely,
    Laura Cage

  25. What a blessing to have such a wonderful memorial for this very special woman in all of your lives. I am a fellow “Michigander” and now a good friend of Carrie’s in California and really enjoyed seeing your family photos in the landscape of my old hometown. This is a very difficult time for all of you but I am sure your Mother is now in a more peaceful place. May God bless you in the months ahead.

  27. Thank you for the lovely photos of Carol and her family. My favorite was the one taken of Grandma and Grandpa Marsack and all fourteen children. I extend my deepest sympathy to Lee and her children and grandchildren. I am very sorry for your loss of Aunt Carol. She was always good to me. Her work researching the Marsack family history and planning the Marsack Reunion in 2003 will live on. I remenber going to her wedding when I was about 12 years old with my mother, Bobbie, and my Dad (Sonny) who was Carol’s brother, and being awed by her beauty. We saw both she and Lee when they returned from their honeymoon. One Christmas she gave me a brand new beautiful dress which was something so very special that I can still remember my amazement and gratitude when I opened the gift. She was generous and gave of herself to all who needed her. Please include me in the celebration of
    Carol Jean Jolgren. Thank you.
    Love,
    Jeanne

  28. Carrie,

What a beautiful tribute. Thank you for sharing this with us. It’s very obvious from these photos and comments that your mom was surrounded by lots of love and will truly be missed. My deepest condolences. We will pray for God’s peace and comfort for all of you.

  29. Lilli,
I am so sorry to hear about your Mom passing. I know you will all miss her deeply; she was a very special lady. June was 10 years since my mother passed… sometimes it seems much longer and other times like yesterday. It is wonderful that you had time to say good bye; and that she didn’t suffer for a long time.

Thank you for sending the link for her memorial web page. I enjoyed reading it and seeing the pictures. I can hardly believe how big the “kids” have gotten. And, congratulations on Andy’s wedding.

Daniel turned 18 in May, Michael 20 in August. Both have grown into nice young men.

Take care, my prayers are with all of you,
    Laura

  30. What a lucky person Carol was to have such a wonderful, loving, attentive family. I only knew her for a very short time while in the hospital, but she made it very known how proud she was of her family. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

    much love,

    ann

  31. I only met Carol once, but I did hear much about her from Amy. She seemed like such a dynamic woman. She sure loved her family. Let the legacy of Carol live on through the woman of the Jolgren family.

    Love, Jenny

  32. Hi Lilli,

I’m so sorry that you have lost your Mom…it’s one of the most difficult things imaginable. My thoughts, sympathy and tears are with you. I really enjoyed your Mom’s website. The pictures are beautiful (and so is your Mom!) and I really enjoyed hearing about her life/your history. The link to info about her illness was a great idea too, since I was not familiar with the condition. I hope that you will find peace with your loss but I know that it takes a long time. Just remember that there are many of us who share the bond of “missing our moms”.

    Jill

  33. We will always think of Carol as light hearted and fun-loving. We know all of her family will miss her so much, but may your many happy memories help you through this difficult time.

  34. I will never forget staying with Carol and Lee about 6 years ago, while visiting with Jenny.
The warmth and kindness that surrounded Carol was magnetic… I will never forget her.
To all the family, my prayers are with you.

  35. Dear Lilli and family,

Thank you for sharing your family memories with us. It was special and very touching to view the family photos.

My family and I want to offer our condolences to you and your family in the loss of your mom. It is so difficult to lose someone you love.

    With sympathy and friendship,

  36. Dearest Jolgren Family,

What a BEAUTIFUL MEMORIAL to a wonderful lady. I know that your hearts are broken and that no words will ever fill the void that has been left by her passing. Spending my last high school days with you all in Novi are among my most cherished memories. Seeing all the pictures of you and yours were wonderful. I remember the picnic in Plymouth just after my mother,Aunt Junie died. It reminded me of the days when we would all see each other at the holidays at Grandma’s house on Vernier Road. Lilli your card caught me off guard with the news of you mother’s death and I am still dumbfounded. John and I just couldn’t believe it. She was always so full of LOVE and LIFE. What a LOVING person always giving whatever she could to help others and her family. Please keep us informed of the Memorial planned for her.May God bless and keep you all close in his love during this time of loss. Seems only yesterday we were all kids on Hampton Hill in Novi. I love and miss you all. You are in my thoughts daily. Love Gail

  37. Dear Jolgren Family;

My cousin Gordy Abramson and I had the pleasure of attending the wedding of Carol and Lee. At that time we were students at MSU .

I spoke to Gordy about your sad loss.We both send our condolences on your loss.

The Finns have a saying “YOU LIVE AS LONG AS YOU ARE REMEMBERD” and through your love and memories she will live forever.

  38. Dear Jolgren Family,

We were shocked and saddened when Amy called to say that Aunt Carol had passed. Our condolences to all of you on the loss of so special a person. The world was lighter for her living, and just a bit dimmer now that she has taken her leave of us.

    Our sincerest sympathies,
Sherman, Maria, Jacqueline, Jocelyn, and Justin

  39. This is such a beautiful website! I have looked at it several times now and cried many tears. I have been searching for the right words to adequately express my feelings, and nothing comes remotely close. Carol was such a special person to me… in so many ways more like a mother to me than my own was. She touched me, and so many others, with her compassion and love… such a bright shining light… when I look up at the stars I am certain her light is there, shining back down on us all. My heart goes out to all of you. Please know you are constantly in my thoughts and prayers. I hope to make the memorial and share in your celebration of her life.
    My deepest sympathies,
    With all my Love,
    Jan

  40. Dearest Jolgren Family,
Our deepest condolences from the Villastique Family, Philippines!
I’ve been wishing to get in touch with any of you and thanks to the new technology (internet). Last August 2008 , i was on my annual vacation and suddenly as i surfed the net, tried to search and tried to be a member of Classmates although am not a Novi high student just to check on how to get in touch with you, I saw Amy’s and Carrie’s names so i left messages to both. I even asked the help of Dave Beall (friend in classmates) and left my email ad with him because my membership will expired 1st week of November 2008 (only 3 months membership). I am really realy happy that my search was very successful and very very sad as well because of the sad news about your mother. Although she is gone am sure she is happy, too. Me and my family would forever treasure your family’s kindness and generosity especially to your mom and dad who really helped me (us) finished my studies with the amount they’re sending us thru CCF. We can’t express our warmest gratitude! But still i have to say “THANK YOU” for everything and for what me and my family have now. I got to know her and your family when we were kids (especailly you Amy because we are on the same age, your mom mentioned in her letters). I remembered that time, me and your mom exchanged letters (but i don’t know your address, we were not allowed to have it) always telling about all of you, David wants to be a doctor, Lilli is painting pictures bigger than the normal size (i have her business cards but w/o the address), Carrie was a small kid that time. I remember all your faces thru the pictures your mon sent me, even i have some pictures of horses with your dad, and picture of your dog. I know for sure that your mom (Mrs. Carol Jolgren) is already right now in heaven knowing that when she was still alive she had done so many things helping, caring and cheering up people around her … i can say that she was my second mother although i know her only by letters and pictures . She was one of the BEST mother on earth! I wish i could attend the gathering at Lilli’s on 29 November …. i am currently working here in the Gulf, Abu Dhabi , United Arab Emirates for 12 years now. I am Food and Beverage Coordinator in one of the Rotana Hotels (Al Maha Arjaan)…website: rotana.com. (my work mail: jovy.villastique@rotana.com)
Mr. Lee Jolgren, David, Lilli, Amy and Carrie (and Grand and Great Grand children) all together pray with me … Eternal rest grant unto Carol’s soul and may she rest in peace, Amen!

You have been in our thoughts. So sorry to learn of Carol’s death. We will see you at Lillis with the old V&L comrades on the 29th. Sincere sympathy, good friend.
    Kip for Joann too

  44. I love the pictures and spent a long time looking at them. Vague and distant memories of my great grandmother.

  45. So grateful that you posted this tribute to your mom…I enjoyed the photos and the ‘walk down memory lane’. Aunt Carol was a true blessing to the Marsack and Jolgren families and her light touched so many people. I still miss her after all these years. I was moved to search for Aunt Carol and my other Marsack ancestors while mourning the loss of my dad, Sherman Marsack Sr., Aunt Carol’s little brother.

  46. Hoteluri Mare

I’m impressed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s
both educative and interesting, and let me tell you, you’ve
hit the nail on the head. The issue is an issue that not enough men and
women are speaking intelligently about. Now i’m very
happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something concerning this.
